Kitesurfing spot at Anse la Raie, Mauritius

Located in the north of Mauritius, Anse la Raie is a kitesurfing spot renowned for its constant winds, spacious lagoon and calm environment, far from the tourist hustle and bustle.

📝 Description

Anse la Raie is an open, uncrowded lagoon, offering ideal sailing conditions for riders seeking a wild, natural setting. Protected by a coral reef, the water features flat water areas suitable for freeriding, as well as access to moderate waves offshore.

This spot offers a rare blend: tranquility, space, and steady wind in a natural setting bordered by filaos and sandy stretches.

🎯 Level

The spot is particularly suited to intermediate to experienced kitesurfers. The wide, open space is perfect for maneuvers, long distances or perfecting foiling.

For beginners, it's best to be supervised as some areas feature current and a shallow coral bottom.

🌬️ Ideal wind conditions

Anse la Raie benefits from a side-onshore wind blowing mainly from the east or northeast. This wind is constant and reliable between June and October, with peaks between 15 and 25 knots.

The trade winds here are strengthened by the geographical openness of the spot, making it one of the best places in the north for regular kitesurfing.

🗓️ Best season

The best time for kitesurfing at Anse la Raie is from May to October, when the trade winds are most steady.

The rest of the year (from November to April) offers more sporadic sessions, but thermals can pick up in the afternoon, especially on clear, warm days.

🛟 Safety

The lagoon is generally safe, but the coral bottom can be abrasive in places, especially at low tide. It is recommended to wear slippers to avoid cuts or sea urchin stings.

The take-off area is clear but can be slightly narrow. If in doubt, favor off-peak hours or sandy areas further north.

🚗 Accessibility

Anse la Raie is easily accessible by car from Grand Baie or Cap Malheureux (10-15 minutes). A path leads directly to the beach where kiteboarders set up their equipment.

Free parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the spot, often in the shade of the filaos.

🏖️ Amenities

The spot is natural and undeveloped. There are no toilets, showers or food outlets directly on site.

For all amenities (water, food, accommodation), you'll need to head to Cap Malheureux or Grand Baie. A few kitesurfing schools can operate in the area on request.
