Le Morne Kite Lagoon, located in the southwest of Mauritius, is a world-renowned kitesurfing destination, offering ideal conditions for kitesurfers of all levels.
The Morne Lagoon is a vast stretch of turquoise, shallow water, protected by a coral reef. This configuration creates a flat water zone perfect for freeride and freestyle β and especially for beginners, while waves form beyond the reef for surfing enthusiasts.
The spot is framed by the majestic Le Morne Brabant mountain, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a spectacular backdrop for kitesurfers.
Le Morne Kite Lagoon is suitable for all levels of kitesurfers.
Beginners appreciate the shallow, calm waters of the lagoon to learn safely, while intermediate and advanced riders can either ride behind the beginner-friendly zone in peace or enjoy the wave spots outside the reef to sharpen their surfing skills.
The ideal time to kitesurf at Le Morne is from May to October, which corresponds to the southern hemisphere winter. During these months, the wind is at its most consistent and the water temperature is pleasant, around 24Β°C.
During the southern hemisphere summer, windy days are less frequent, but can still offer incredible sessions with turquoise water, blue skies, and warm water (30Β°C). However, the wind can be quite unstable, and sessions may end abruptly with the arrival of clouds.
In the interseason months, wind is relatively rare, but you can still expect a few kiting days throughout the month.
The lagoon provides a safe environment thanks to its shallow, protected waters.
However, it is recommended to wear neoprene booties to protect against coral and sea urchins on the seabed. Although rare, stonefish can also be found in Mauritius β their sting is extremely painful and can lead to serious complications.
At high tide, it can be difficult to stand in the lagoon, and currents may become quite strong.
Conversely, when the water level is low, many coral heads are just a few centimeters below the surface, or even protruding.
Kitesurfers should also be aware of the wave zones beyond the reef, which are reserved for experienced riders due to the strong currents and powerful waves.
If you're unsure about your level of independence, many schools offer supervised riding services to ensure your safety.
Many kitesurf schools are based at the Kite Lagoon, offering lessons for all levels as well as equipment rental.
The parking area is located directly at the spot.
Youβll find public restrooms just 3 minutes away by car, at the public beach of Le Morne near the Lux Le Morne Hotel.
At lunchtime, you can grab something to eat from a food truck located on the public beach almost all year round. In winter, another food truck may be found either in the Kite Lagoon parking area or at the Pointe du Morne spot.
There are trash bins available on-site, but the wind often scatters waste across the beach. Itβs best to take your trash with you.
Beyond kitesurfing, the area offers a variety of activities such as hiking the Le Morne Brabant mountain trail, snorkeling, and exploring the nearby beaches and other water-based experiences.
A horse riding center is located just behind the Kite Lagoon and offers rides along the waterβs edge.
Le Morne Brabant mountain is also a historic site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, once a refuge for runaway slaves. A monument is located behind the public beach and is accessible during the day.
Le Morne is an iconic symbol deeply rooted in the hearts of Mauritians. During your sessions, you'll often meet locals coming to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Kite Lagoon.
It's not uncommon for people to spend long evenings by the water and around a fire at the Kite Lagoon, and even camp there overnight on weekends.
When the wind isn't blowing, the Kite Lagoon becomes a peaceful haven, welcoming walkers and fishermen in search of tranquility.
The water temperature at Le Morne ranges from 23Β°C in winter (June to September) to 28Β°C to 30Β°C in summer (December to March), offering pleasant conditions for kitesurfing all year round.
A 2/3mm wetsuit is ideal for winter, while a simple UV-protective top is enough during summer.
